[Artist Statement] Oracle Series: My work is a creative exploration of human story and myth. Longstanding interest and study of the global allegories from prehistoric times to contemporary era inform the figurative work I create in the studio using everyday people as models. Conceptually, I am interested in (re)presenting what is below the surface to challenge belief systems or the structures created in society. What does a hero look like? Who are our contemporary villains? This exposition ultimately creates work that is concurrently intimate and destructive, and potentially antagonistic.

My process begins with an inkjet print on Japanese rice paper that is then fused with encaustic, or beeswax, and further transformed with paint, collaged materials, and anything else I may be inspired to use. With a natural affinity for texture, I take pleasure in affecting the surface of my work to create a visceral topography. By taking risks with paint, wax and other media I endeavor to allow my creative subconscious the freedom to play, dream and inevitably teach me about my own human story.

Nichole DeMent, "Metamorphosis", Mixed media encaustic on board, 36”x12”
Nichole DeMent, "Dervish", Mixed media encaustic on paper [Sold]

Krista Kelly Appointed Director of ART@SDC

Krista Kelly has recently been appointed Director of ART@SDC. Krista has played an integral role in the formation of the committee, which consists of twelve art galleries at the Seattle Design Center
In 1973, the Benaroya’s founded Seattle Design Center as a creative epicenter to serve the needs of interior designers and architects. The design center now has 40,000 square feet dedicated to art gallery space. Krista has led the members of ART@SDC in developing a cohesive identity and a presence as art galleries beyond the Design Center by including the greater Seattle community in monthly events, shows, lectures and classes. In addition, ART@SDC participates in art based events hosted by the Design Center.
Krista Kelly was born in Redmond, Washington. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2003 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has since worked as an art consultant, an applied arts designer, and has taught at the Pratt Fine Arts Center. Krista founded Bilinear Art Consulting in 2006, which offers client-orientated art consultation for private and public spaces. Bilinear is one of the twelve galleries that makes up ART@SDC.

She uses a blend of old and new image making techniques to reveal a primal and personal vision of nature in its most elemental form. Her elegant compositions are evocative of specimens collected from a memory of encounter, an experience of something eternal and inextricably of us. They are works of discovery unveiled with a subtle lens.

[Statement] I fell in love with photography at a young age, readily embracing the serenity and calm I felt with a camera in hand. My subjects are rewarding and a constant source of inspiration. With so much to experience and observe, I am grateful for the beauty around me and the chance to share my view with others. As I travel, locally or abroad, I find inspiration in the smallest details and in the most striking landscapes. I am always ready and excited to capture moments full of energy and a sense of place.

Timothy Cross | New Works

Now on Show at Bilinear Art Gallery
Seattle Design Center, Plaza Suite 260
Timothy Cross, "Roses", 34"x 42", ink, oil and acrylic on UV print on canvas, 2011 [Sold]

[About] "Roses" is a series made from a photograph of Timothy Cross' mother's garden at night.

Timothy Cross, "Roses", 17" x 13", ink, oil and acrylic on UV print on paper, 2011 (Framed) [Sold]

[Statement] I began making music in my teens and soon changed to the plastic arts, working in printmaking, clay, found objects and painting simultaneously. Since then I’ve explored many media and have discovered that drawing is at the center of a kind of expansive practice that I currently enjoy. I have a strong connection to the Northwest and feel that my work is heavily inspired by the culture and landscapes surrounding Seattle.

[Biography] Timothy Cross was born and raised in Seattle and Edmonds. He received his B.A. from The Evergreen State College in 1995, and MFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 2003. Cross has been published in New American Paintings twice.  He has exhibited at Tacoma Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum Gallery, and Sea-Tac Airport. His work has been acquired in private collections, as well as the King County and City of Seattle Portable Works Collection.
